1B Media Language

Analyse one of your pieces of coursework in terms of Media Language.

Within this essay I will assess my work throughout my first year of media studies; of which I produced a short film opening based on the genre of sport. Media language is presented in various ways within this product and the audience is able to receive various connotations through images within. This production enabled us to communicate to our audience through media language which comes alongside a variety of different aspects; the way we used mise en scene, camera work, editing and sound. There was also various use of codes and conventions in order to use stereotypes to enhance the story of the film opening.

Mise en Scene allowed us to connect to the audience especially through the characters. With there being two girls; one rich and one poor, the general view would be that the poor girl would not perform as well as the one who is rich, however we wanted to diminish this stereotype by showing both can be successful, having trained in opposite conditions. With the use of costume it was apparent who had more money, this will also shown within the locations each girl was training in; one in a field, one in a gym. Body language also allowed us to show the audience that putting effort in allows for a better outcome, for example, when the poor girl repeatedly tries a skill she succeeds. In relation to this, by identifying Vladimir Propps' media theory helps the audience identify the characters as a particular theme/person. For example, by having one of the girls in poor clothes and based within low conditions to train within, this instantly makes the audience sympathise with this character, wanting them to succeed, however we challenged this convention in order to show that no matter conditions or financial status, you are still able to achieve your aims.

By the use of different camera angles and shots this allowed us to use Media Language to show the different characters in the way we wanted them to be portrayed. Within the swimming scene the camera is vertically below the girl who is rich, this is too show and power and status that she believes to have due to have more money than her opponent. However, the camera is also used to show the characters in equal frames, this is to enhance the moral of the story that they are both equally talented despite one having more money than the other, this is shown when they are both tieing their laces and walking out of the door.

Within editing, the colour and lighting is extremely important in perceiving the characters in the correct way. For example within the scene when laces are being tied and the girls are leaving outside of the door, the one with more money has a more vibrant colour shot in comparison to her opponent, this is in order to somewhat degrade the poor girl. Linking with this, within the scene of long jump it is a very dull and gloomy atmosphere which aimed to highlight how this character had less money, in comparison to this, it had a fast cut transition to the next scene of the rich girl on the same track however the lighting and location looked a lot more uplifting and powerful with bright blue skies. The connotations the audience would receive from these quick scenes is that with the rich girl having more money she benefits from a variety of aspect.

Using sound within this production was also a choice to be made carefully as we wanted to right message to be promoted in aid of the visuals within the film opening. For example the main lyrics sing "I wanna fly away, away, away", which our meaning we wish to portray is that both the girls are determined to succeed. A lot of the beats are also in time with each scene and cut in order to have a sense of empowerment for the girls to perform to a high standard. The use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound contributes to the use of media language. For example with diegetic dialogue used this allows the audience to receive a better understanding of who the characters are and what they are training for, also seen within the visuals. With both of the coaches expressing different tones and attitudes allows the audience the recieve a better idea of the stereotype being used. The rich girl with her coach has dialogue within their scene saying "No pain, No gain!" which is a complete comparison to the other coach with a slack attitude of "You're late" to the poor girl.

As a result, the use of media language within this work was effective and vital in portraying the representation and genre of the short film opening. With the use of different camera angles and shots this allowed us to enhance the type of characters in this film opening and the mise on scene factors also ensured that the audience understood the type of message we was willing to portray. This was also executed through the challenging of conventions, even with enigma codes being a prominent factor within the film opening, with conventions being changed, this gave space for even more questions to be asked and the audience to stay captivated within the performance of the characters; such as, who will win? and will they both succeed their dreams? As the audience can clearly see they are both at equal standards of performance.
