Research and Planning Skills
Explain how your research and planning skills have developed over time, and how that has contributed to your media production outcomes.
PLAN
INTRO- Give an overview of the type of research and planning skills we have used over both years. Why we research and plan before our product. How this helps our product outcome.
PARA 1- Year 12 research tasks
PARA 2- Year 12 planning tasks (Dancing Animals, Juno, Prelim, On Track, use of DISTINCT, storyboard, website)
PARA 3- What skills developed over Year 12. (presentation skills, technology understanding- premiere, cameras (goPro), wix)
PARA 4- Year 13 research tasks (artists analysis, genre research, digipak and website, music video editing/techniques)
PARA 5- Year 13 planning tasks (Prelim of 212- synergy, shooting schedule, 20 second breakdown, music video timeline, prop list, digipak ideas, stealomatic, storyboard)
CONCLUSION- To what extent have skills developed. How this benefitted the final product. How much advancements have been made.
Throughout our Media Studies modules in the first and second years our research and planning skills had vastly improved from the beginning of AS to the end of A2, this ranged from skills improving within research tasks such as looking into different genres and their meanings and the improvement within presentation and how we approached this by the end of A2. With these advancements they have contributed to our media production outcomes as planning and research is the foundation of the final product.
Within Year 12 there were various research tasks that helped us build up towards our final product. Without research we would not have been able to produce a final product to our desired standard. For example in Year 12 there were various research tasks in helping us develop a final short film opening, of which my group and I's was focused on sport. We undertook various research tasks to advance our understanding of the film industry, for example we analysed other short film openings, analysis of film titles and we looked heavily into institutions and the production of film. This helped us influence our work as we found out information about what type of industries such as Big Six and
We also examined Mise En Scene, Camera, Sound and Editing of various different video clips and we analysed them in parts to understand what will need to go into our film opening to give it enough meaning and background.
Moreover, in Year 12 as well as research tasks we also focused on planning, which enabled us to broaden our ideas to produce our final product. There were various planning stages throughout this years, including tasks such as the Dancing Animals, Juno and our prelim, all undertaken before our final product was produced. We widely used DISTINCT to help us with our product as this was a set of guidelines we understood and knew we had to keep to in order to develop our research and planning skills in contributing to our final product. Within AS we also produced a storyboard which was the foundation of our final product, this helped us with our shooting days and enabled us to know what shots and angles we needed at particular times ready for us to edit the footage. We also planned our website in conjunction with our research tasks as we analysed a variety of different websites to do with films and promotional features.
Various skills developed to an extent over the AS period, however skills maintained were minimal in comparison to the final outcome produced in A2. However, within AS we developed within our knowledge of presentational skills as this allowed us to plan within our groups and share ideas, and our technology skills were also developed within planning whilst we were producing our prelim tasks and Juno tasks we had shots and angles that we had to include which developed our skills up to building our final product at the end of Year 12.
In comparison to this, by the time we had reached Year 13 the intensity of skills needed was a lot higher than we had to use before; enabling us to contribute positively to our final outcome. During A2 there was a variety of research tasks that helped our understanding of the music industry, genres as well as what goes into music videos and what is needed to build a focus on brand image. There was various research that went into our final product of Year 13 and these skills did exceed, for example we researched into artists by analysing them, their products such as websites, albums and their music, digipak research, specifically country (a focus on our genre) and we also looked into music video editing and their techniques to advance our understanding ready for us to edit our footage. Research tasks such as the synergy and cross media branding tasks allowed us to compare how artists used the same themes, colours and ideas between all products and this enables the artist to secure a brand image and be recognised for a particular feature, for example within our group we had a focus on a pink colour with a bold Logo involving a microphone highlighting our country theme.
As well as researching, our planning tasks were also a key part in our development skills of research and planning and how this contributes to our final product. The way in which we planned our product extensively contributed to the final outcome. Within our planning we began with our preliminary task where we copied a music video and copied all of the shots and angles and edited it to match up as much as possible to the original. From our preliminary task we understood the fundamentals needed to be included in the final video. In the planning stages for our final product we went through with tasks such as planning what type of visuals we would like within the music video, our task called "stealomatic" gave us the chance to produce visuals in an edited form alongside the audio for our music video and we had a brief idea of what we would like within the music video, such as country locations, focus on the artists and different types of angles and editing techniques (cloning). A shooting schedule also allowed us to plan all the times at which we would film, helping us to stay organised and film all of the footage we needed for the video, this also came with a risk assessment where we would assess all health and safety precautions needed to be taken into considerations before we began filming at this location, this allowed us all to stay safe and have an efficient turn out whilst filming.
In conclusion, over the two years there have been a variety of tasks that have helped out research and planning skills develop over time, this is due to having the access of different technologies and multiple softwares, such as Microsoft and Adobe Premiere and Photoshop. By understanding all of the different functions within the software this largely benefitted the final result of our product and it is apparent that skills have developed entirely over the two years, ensuring that our final product of Year 13 has intense qualities that may not have been needed or used within Year 12. Although Year 12 out outcome was to a high standard, our skills developed over time in order to match up to all of the requirements needed for our final product in year 13 and that is due to all of the foundational work we carried out within our research and planning tasks.
