Over the period of two years, undertaking both AS and A2, I have had two final outcomes, one of which was a film opening and the second being a music video. Throughout the process of making these products my understanding of conventions has developed effectively, also benefitting the final results of our end products.
Genre was a key focus when we produced a short film opening within our first year. Genre is a category that depicts a feature of something particular, in this instance we firstly focused on the genre within film. There are multiple different genre categories that films fall under due to their content. Understanding what type of genre the product is is extremely important due to the institutions they belong in and knowing who their target audience is. For example, a horror movie may have content that a particular age is not advised to watch, therefore it will fall under a certain category.
Throughout the prelim task in AS I included many different types of camera shots as well as different editing techniques, this was due to highlighting our genre. My prelim was focused on the genre of horror, of which we used music inspired by a horror theme as well as different effects whilst editing to make the visuals look spooky and fit in with the genre. We used a wave effect over a bit of the footage to show the actress going into the dream as well as using a backing track and a voice over. All of these culminated together to try and show the audience that the genre was horror; we used a ghosting effect which made the actress look dizzy towards the end. However, the focus was mainly on the use of props and the visuals within the video, therefore conventions were limited in showing the genre. Although I vaguely knew what the conventions in media were, this wasn't applied until later in our course, therefore showing development. In contrast, in A2 I understood conventions which developed right until the end of our production of our final product of the music video.
During AS, our genre for the film opening was sport and we understood, to an extent, the type of conventions we needed to include within our product to highlight its genre, however how understanding did extend whilst the process progressed. By the use of different setting and locations, we knew we could show the genre of sport; we did this by filming on a running track, in a swimming pool and on a field. This can clearly be shown to the audience as a sport genre. Our costume was also important in showing genre, however there were numerous other conventions we knew we could use, but we did not decide to due to thinking the setting and costume showed the genre enough. In comparison to this, whilst producing our music video in A2 there were a collection of conventions that we knew we had to include ranging from different camera angles, Mise and scene to the use of lighting, sound and props. Throughout both of the years we throughly researched into various conventions we needed to understand and apply within our products. For example, for the short film opening we looked into sporting films; specifically inspired by Fast Girls, and we knew we needed to have a variety of themes and use different icons (mainly props) to highlight the genre of sport. In A2 we did the same within research, we had multiple tasks requiring us to analyse different videos and the type of features that they included we was inspired by. For example, we needed to continuously have a country theme throughout, therefore by researching into country music video, we realised a lot of the locations was within a nature filled setting such as a park or field and the colours used also highlighted the genre. Warm colours such as pink, yellow and green were frequently used, therefore we did the same.
Throughout A2, our final product of our music video fell under the genre of country due to the conventions we applied within our music video. We could have made our video into any type of genre, however by the use of location, editing and Mise en scene, we were able to produce a country music video. By three way colour correcting most of the footage within our video we were able to level out all colours into a warm neutral colour, a convention we used to highlight the country genre.
